Sat, 3   8:00 AM Formal 40 led by: Jubran <sm4sm@aol.com>
This Independence Day Weekend tradition continues. This year we skate it on the 3rd. We'll skate the Washington & Old Dominion Trail (W&OD), starting in Vienna, VA. We'll meet between 7:30AM and 8:00AM, and leave at 8:00AM. All levels are welcome. The typical format is to skate 20 miles out then 20 miles back so if 40 miles don't suit you just pick your own turn-around point for the distance of your choice, greater or lesser.

We'll meet at the W&OD parking lot in Vienna, VA, by the Red Caboose. Click on this caboose for info/directions.

Typically the group winds up broken up into several smaller groups of similar ability/speed. Bikes, skateboards, powerbocks, etc.. are welcome to join.

For those who want to do lunch afterwards, there is a lot to choose from in Vienna. No "Formal" lunch plans, we'll just wing it on the day of the event.
Location: The Red Caboose in Vienna, VA.

Mon, 5   11 am July 5th Intermediate Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
Announcing an intermediate skate, leaving the White House at 11 am on Monday, July 5th.

The skate starts at 11 am, plenty of time for people recovering from a late night on July 4th, I hope.

The pace will be suitable to the heat and humidity, which is to say relaxed and laid back. A 9.5 mile skate with one memorable uphill. The downhills are nice and gentle.

Many people have Monday off as a holiday. Parking restrictions are lifted in DC for the holiday. Including this skate, it will have been possible to have skated more than 94 miles on WAR skates this weekend.

Sat, 17   11 AM CANCELED: Skate Across Maryland (twice!) led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
The Skate Across Maryland scheduled for Saturday (7/17/10) has been canceled due to geological instability. It is simply not possible to "skate across Maryland" anymore, because a 27" gap has opened up across the state as a result of the great Gaithersburg/Germantown earthquake of 2010. I cannot in good conscience lead a skate where someone could conceivably fall into this crevasse. So I won't do it. No sir! At least this Saturday. These things have a way of healing themselves so I would consider doing this skate on some future Saturday after the seismic situation has improved.

Cheers,
George

To all, to each, a fair good-night, And pleasing dreams, and
slumbers light. --
Sir Walter Scott

Announcing the Skate Across Maryland (SAM). We start in Hancock, Maryland, skate over to West Virginia, skate back into Maryland, up into Pennsylvania, and then back into Maryland. When we finish we will have traversed the State of Maryland twice, while visiting another state (West Virginia) and a commonwealth (Pennsylvania).

It's a long way to Hancock, MD, to just skate across Maryland twice, so for those looking for additional skating (or perhaps instead of the SAM) my recommendation is to skate the scenic western half of the WMRT.

SAM Route Map
Contact me about carpooling.
